A Christmas Guest

The girls were being particularly difficult this evening about going to bed.  Given that its the night before our Christmas celebrations begin, this is not unusual.  But then the two youngest began coming out and complaining of something flying around there room, my patience ended.  I looked around their room for this mysterious winter moth and found nothing.  After chastening the girls once again that it was time for sleep I retired to the living room.  A few moments later Tatie came back out with reports of the invisible moth flying over her bead, I sent her to bed and begged the girls to go to sleep.  Again I went to the living room and resumed the watching of an awful attempt at a new show by ABC called “The List”.  A few moments later over top of my head and straight into the living room flew…

A BAT!

A big, black, scary BAT!  (Insert mental notes to apologize to the children here.)  I screamed for the girls to close their door!  The bat swooped at me and I screamed again for the girls to close their door!  The bat ciricled back around and was headed back toward their room when I screamed again and just as Sydney slammed their door shut the Bat took a sharp turn into the den.  At which point I slammed the door shut locking it in.

Todd was sound asleep heavily drugged on prescription cough medicine.  I threw open the door and yelled, “Todd!  There is a BAT in the house!”  To which he replied, “Are you serious?”  Because obviously waking my husband up from a dead sleep and pretending that flying rodents have invaded the house  is what I call a good time.  NOT.  After a brief chat with the girls and reassurances as to Todd bat capturing skillz (on account of his love for Batman and all) we were ready to go after our uninvited guest.

By the time we secured blankets (the preferred Bat capturing equipment) and were ready to open up the den door the Bat decided to launch a counter strike!  It was wiggling out underneath the door!  he headed straight for me, of course.  I screamed and threw my blanket on it and it was captured!  Todd gathered it up and took it outside and sent it off into the night.

And now here it is 11:18 on little Christmas eve and the kids have finally gone to sleep after the excitement and Todd is now fully awake.  I on the other hand am exhausted and will surely be dreaming of bats tonight.  Oh Joy.

Merry Batmas to all and to all a good night!

  1. My poor little grandaughters they will tell this story some day to their children and mom and dad will be listening sounds like a great Christmas story to me but very creepy !

  2. The Christmas Bat… Sounds like with a little tweaking you have an excellent children’s story on your hands. Especially if it turns out that bat came down the chimney like Father Christmas….

Of course, maybe it was lonely and hoping someone would invite it in to celebrate Christmas. Or always wanted to stand on the top of the pretty tree like a Christmas Angel…(Now I’m picturing that amazing M.C. Escher drawing with the interlocking angels and bats — so that the space between every angel is filled in with a bat…).

Very impressed with your bat-catching prowess my dear — even with a blanket it’s not easy to pin them down. Have you had a lot of practice?
