Well I hope you are all just chocked full of yummy turkey this fine Thursday. Last night Tatie was having trouble sleeping and Todd’s allergies were acting up, both of them had very restless nights until around 2:30 am. Our bedroom was very hot so I chose to sack out on the couch so that I could open up the deck door (there is no way that Todd would have handled the window being open with the way he was feeling). I fell asleep feeling the nice cool breeze blowing in through the door. That is until the front came in and the temperature dropped! I woke up at 4 am FREEZING!!! I jumped into bed, grateful it was still toasty in there.
Todd and the girls let me sleep in. They spent the morning watching the parade and Sydney made some banana bread for breakfast. (She’s becoming quite the little chef.) I woke up to the sound Lifehouse floating in from the living room. (Not a bad thing to wake up too.) I soon joined the crew for the rest of the parade and some warm banana bread. We watched the big guy come in and the headed off to get ready for the day. Its at this point that its important you know the plan…
Step one – Let mom sleep in, make banana bread for breakfast – CHECK
Step two – Watch the parade – CHECK
Step three – Get dressed, switch between the dog show and some football game – CHECK
Step four – Play family game (Parcheesi was chosen for the day, Todd won) – CHECK
Step five – Pick up pre-ordered Dinner from Kroger (Todd’s suggestion so I wouldn’t spend all day in the kitchen, isn’t he sweet!)
Step six – Set table, and dress (Sunday best) for dinner (we were doing things the traditional way this year)
Step seven – Eat and pass out from Turkey overdose.
Notice that the CHECKS stop at picking up the dinner. Here is what transpired and where our Thanksgiving day took a detour. As I mentioned Todd suggested I order a pre-made dinner from Kroger so that I could spend the day lounging with everyone instead of spending the day in the kitchen. So I ordered it last week, for pick up at 3pm today. We went all out. We dressed for dinner, set the table with all the nice dishes, all in anticipation for the yummy turkey and fixings I would be picking up at 3pm. I went the the store to pick up our meal. When I arrived, the Deli clerk asked my name, then went to the back to pick up my order. A few moments later he arrived carrying a large box. He placed the box in my cart then opened it to check its contents. As he did so I peek in with anticipation only to see…
A Turkey still in its wrapping!!!! Then he hands me a print out of cooking instructions! NOTHING WAS COOKED!!!
I said, “um…its not cooked?”
He replied bored, “We don’t cook them.” As if I were stupid for even thinking so!
The commercial said NOTHING about them not being cooked! It was 3pm!!! We wouldn’t have eaten till 8 or 9 o’clock! I walked out of the store frustrated with out a thing. I sat there in my car in shock. I had waiting for me at home one husband and three very excited daughters. I pictured their sweet faces in their Sunday clothes all seated round the table waiting for my grand entrance. I called my friend Christina, who laughed hysterically, because I swear these things only happen to me, and then we began to strategize. I drove around in search of food till I found a Chinese food place still open. Infact, when I walked in they were just 10 mins away from closing for the day, but graciously cooked my food. While I waited I called Todd and told him what happened, he barely stopped laughing long enough to tell me I did the right thing.
I drove home and had to park in an adjacent parking lot because our was full of visitors cars. Walked in the rain carrying my bags and drinks I picked up while I was out. The children rushed to the door as soon as they heard it open and then just stared at me blankly. I think they were shocked. Kinsey finally spoke up, “Mom, where’s the Turkey?”
Todd explained and everything was ok, as soon as we reassured Tatie she would be getting turkey tomorrow. We dined and laughed. It was a wonderful Thanksgiving.
We had a real live “A Christmas Story” Thanksgiving!!!!
Why do these things happen to me?
In honor of my nutty day I give you the greatest Thanksgiving video ever…

Sorry you had Chinese for Thanksgiving. I can’t believe it wasn’t cooked. Our cooked turkey was very filling 🙂
I know, crazy wasn’t it! I am glad you had a good thanksgiving though!
Because of how I was feeling (lousy) dad suggested a couple of weeks ago that we do the same thing so that I wouldn’t be hurting and exhausted getting ready for giving thanks, sssoooo, I have a feeling we would have had Mia Mexico or some such just as you went Chinese…. talk about false advertisement!!! Shame on them. Muchos Gracias, Deo, anyway, for all our family’s blessings. Love.
Sorry about the Turkey dinner, but I am sure you made up for it at Ruth Anne’s. If I had known you could have come to my house for dinner. That would have been great, since it was only me and Roger. Love you guys!!!!!!
