I need some HEAT!

Todd was putting on his work boots this morning to go out and trudge through the snow and mentioned that he was wearing 2 pairs of socks.   Why two pairs I ask?  Because he said, “All my boot socks are being used as heating pads!”  LOL!!  Too true my dear.  I have stolen all his boot socks over the years to create the best heating pads ever.  Socks you say?  How do you make a heating pad out of a sock?  Here’s how!

Materials:

1 of your husband’s boot socks.  (just one, you can leave the other in his drawer for use at a later date or to drive him crazy cause he can’t find the match.)

A Funnel or piece of paper you can shape into a funnel.  (I am cheap, I use the paper.)

3-4 cups of uncooked rice (depending on the size of your husbands foot).

A Microwave.

Directions:

Sneak into your husbands sock drawer and “borrow” one of this thick boot socks.  Preferably one without holes unless you want to add needle and thread to the materials list.

Later remember the excuse…”The dryer must have eaten it honey!”

Turn the sock inside out.  Cause the inside is all soft and fuzzy (We like them soft and fuzzy!). 😀

Use funnel/paper to fill the sock with 3-4 cups of uncooked rice.  Use the cheap rice, cause its not like you are going to eat it later…though I suppose you could count it as food storage…. eeeeewwwwww!

Tie a knot in the end of the sock.  This keeps all the rice inside. Duh.

Pop it in the microwave for 1-2 minutes depending on how warm you like yours to be.

Ta Da!  HEATING PAD!  Its reusable, disposable, and all around enjoyable!  And no sewing was needed!  They are great if you need one on the fly because you can make one in just a few minutes.  And if it one day gets a hole, guess what?  You go and find its match and make another.  The kids love them, especially when they are sick, or have come in from a cold play day.  Here are a few pictures of them I found online.  Make one!  You’ll thank me later.  😀

  1. I have actually seen that done before. Its nice if you add a little fragrency to it as well. But only for those without sensative noses like someone I know. 😀

    • Are you speaking of moi? 😀 Good gravy the frangrance just kills me! But I imagine to those with less sensitive noses its quite nice. Perhaps some lillac or vanilla sents.

      • Oui Mon petit friend. Your nose is sensative.
Oh I’ve never though of vanilla! That would probably be nice. Lavender is also a good one for relaxing.

        • Oh wow — I never realized that it was so easy to MAKE one! My mother gave my daughter a lavender-scented microwavable cat (!) years ago and I’ve always coveted it. Ok, so a sock isn’t quite as cute as a black and white moggie — but it’s just as warm, and soothing to strained muscles, cold feet etc. And not subject to teenage territorial possessiveness (“hey, that’s MY cat you’re heating up…”). THIS IS GENIUS! Thank you!!!! (And yum, wouldn’t vanilla scent be consoling…).

          • I have seen the cute patterns for the animals and things, and I imagine they would be nice to have, but there is something about the desposablness of the simple ones that I like. No stressing if it gets barfed on, gets a hole, or gets lost. But the cat does sound adorable.

          • There are patterns for cats??? Now that is WAY out of my league. Other people’s skill with the needle never ceases to amaze me. Ours is strictly a boughten moggie — which is why the sock is so exciting to me. I love projects I can actually DO! And hey, no is allowed to dispose of MY lovely sock warmer — still less barf on it!

  2. I have used these and put them on my neck and forehead…supposedly they help with migraines. Maybe they can work for you as they have not worked for me.

    • I love them. They are a huge help with headaches for me. But I don’t have near the suffering in that department you do. 🙁

  3. That is very clever! I just use a heating pad…silly me when I could have been driving Tom crazy all these years trying to find a match for his sock! A missed opportunity for sure.

  4. this is so neat!!! is it bad that all I can think of is… This is how I’ll make visiting teaching presents! lol oh the joys of being old.

    • It would make a great visiting teaching gift. Infact I think I will join you. This months lesson is on not going into debt. What a better gift then showing someone a thrifty alternative.
