I was cutting apart a plastic ringed drink holder this morning when I was reminded of a conversation I had with Sydney when she was little.
She sat at the table curiously watching me meticulously cutting open all of the rings on a soon to be discarded drink holder. After I finished and tossed the now harmless piece of plastic into the trash and returned to my seat at the table Sydney looked up at me with those big brown eyes and asked:
“Why do you do that Mom?”
“Do what?” I asked.
“Cut up that drink holder thing.”
“Oh that.” I replied pausing to come up with a reason. And then I finally replied. “Because I was scared as a child by a public service announcement.”
It makes me wonder what things will have a lasting effect on my children. I imagine they will never try smoking because of those “Truth” ads. And drug use is out, though we can all quote the “Dad I learned it from watching you!” or the “Brain on drugs – egg ad” public service announcements, and I don’t know that that had much of an affect on our generation. It just makes me curious about what other things I do now that are the direct result of a public service announcement…

What things have affected you?

Do you remember those “Buckle up for safety” ads from when we were younger? When my siblings and I were kids everytime we would jump into the car we would buckle up and then yell at the adult who was driving with us … usually my grandmother because my mom would buckle anyway…”Buckle Up For SAFETY!!!”
Now they have the “Click it or Ticket” ad…just not the same.
Those are soooo not the same! I totally agree!
I guess the Donna Reed, Leave it to Beaver and Molly Mormon all make me feel like an inferior homemaker. It always makes me nervous to have strangers in my home worrying about how they are judging me for the cleanliness and order of my home. Having family in too makes me anxious because I want them to feel special and loved by my humble efforts to make things nice for them. I can always see things in my own home that needs to be done better.
