Happy Birthday Todd!

Today marks the 34th birthday of the president of Bright Girl Empire!  😛

In celebration of this exciting day I invite you to tell your best “Todd” story in the comments below!  I will start.

Early in our marriage we were very poor and I had to make due on a food budget of about $150 a month.  Being a young bride and an inexperienced cook I had about 7 meals in my arsenal that I would rotate through weekly.  One of those meals was hot dogs (or as I called them -to make them sound fancy – Coney Islands).  Every month we would go to the grocery store together and buy our monthly stores.  At around 3 months of marriage we were in the store as per our routine.  I stood there in the canned food isle scanning the cans of chili sauce looking for the one that didn’t have beans in it.  when I spied the can I picked it up off the shelf and began to walk toward the cart.  Just as I was about to place the can into the cart Todd throws his hands into the air and shouts at the top of his lungs, “I CAN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE! I HATE HOT DOGS!  I HAVE ALWAYS HATED HOT DOGS!  IF I NEVER EAT ANOTHER HOT DOG AS LONG AS I LIVE IT WILL BE TOO SOON!!!!”

Stunned at the sudden unexpected outburst, all I could do was stare slack jawed with the can of beanless chili still in my hand.  An elderly couple, who had been examining jelly beside us, nervously placed their pick in their cart and cautiously backed out of the isle whispering and staring at Todd.

My voice slowly found its way back to my throat and I said, “O….kay” and put the chili sauce back on the shelf.  I turned slowly back around and said, “You know, you could have told me sooner and without scaring old people.”

Todd look around his cheeks blushing slightly, “Sorry.” he muttered. “I didn’t want to hurt your feelings.”

“Oh yes,” I said.  “This way was much better.”

And so it is known as the great Hot Dog incident.

Happy Birthday Honey!  Make a Wish!

  1. The look of complete and utter Aw on Todd’s face as we came around the corner and stood before Fenway Park…or Pahhhk if your from Boston. 😀 That was priceless.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY TODD!

  2. I remember playing Trivial Pursuit ( I think that’s right) at our apartment in Louisville with you guys and there was some teasing or badgering from Todd about the game. I went into the bathroom to get away (I don’t think I was angry though) but Todd followed me. I told him to go out and he kept teasing. I told him I was going to go to the bathroom so he’d better leave. He didn’t, so I dropped my drawers and went to the bathroom anyway. He left the room stunned that I had actually done that. (I don’t know if I remember that acurately or not though. But that’s how it goes in my mind)
Happy Birthday Mr. Todd! Next time we play games, if we ever get back to Kentucky, I’ll make sure I have more propriety. 🙂 Well, I’ll try anyway.

  3. Hello Girls.

My name is Chris Biddle. I grew up with your dad. I remember many happy afternoons, spent playing with your dad at your grandparents house. I was a handful of trouble for them. But they were also like a second family for me (and a lot of boys) and they always loved me and took good care of me.

I have a lot of memories of time spent with your dad. We used to record radio programs on a cassette recorder and play them and laugh at how silly they were. We would interview each other and put on dumb voices and pretend we were movie characters and other silly people. Ask your dad about them. He might even have a few of them laying around somewhere.

We also used to make up our own game shows and trivia contests and have Jim and Ruth Anne play them in their living room. Todd and I would write all of the questions. Sometimes he would host and I would be the Fabulous Prizes Model. Sometimes I would host and he would model the prizes for the contestants. The prizes were always stuff we found in their basement. So, it was a chance for your grandparents to answer our dumb trivia questions and win back their own stuff from us.

I also remember that one summer, your dad and I collected those super bouncy balls. You know the ones I mean? They’re all different colors and you could get them from the dime machines at the grocery store. Todd and I would direct all of our dimes towards collecting hundreds of those bouncy balls and we would store them in his bedroom in mason jars and anything else we could find. I estimate that we probably had two or three hundred of them. We were a little bit obsessed about it.
But then, a crisis happened. I came over to Todd’s house to find that almost all of the bouncy balls were gone. There were only like ten or twenty of them there. I was shocked. I asked Todd what happened. He told me that a cousin of his came over, during the week and was really impressed by our bouncy balls. He took them to the front door of their condo, which was up on a hillside and had dumped them all out the front door to watch them bounce down the front steps, the sidewalk and out into the street. Todd implied that this cousin wasn’t right in the head.
He said he tried to save whatever he could, but that a lot of them had gone down a drain and it was getting late and he couldn’t be out in the dark, chasing bouncy balls in the street. So, they were lost. We stopped collecting bouncy balls after that. I think we moved on to comic books.

Your dad is a great guy. He was one of my best friends, growing up. By being the smart one, the good kid and the fair sportsman, he taught me how a guy SHOULD act. I learned a lot from him. You should learn a lot from him too. I know he sure does love you girls to death.

    All My Best,
    Chris O. Biddle

  4. One of my favorite stories is when Todd came to our Sacrament meeting as a guest speaker. He stood at the podium and introduced himself. He then said he wanted to try an experiment before he got started and asked the congregation to lean to the right slowly. Then he asked quite solemnly for us to lean to the left just as carefully. He then said with a boyish grin, “Thank you so much! Now when my friends in Louisville ask me how I did today I can tell them that I “moved” my audience twice!”

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TODD! WE LOVE YOU! Forever and Always, Mary.

  5. Happy Birthday to a Great American. Laura joins me in extending our best wishes. Come visit us in Dallas or Crawford sometime.

  6. Hmmm, I have many stories on B Todd Bright but most I shouldn’t share online as he was a member of the bishopric.

However, I do recall many a Sunday afternoon in the sweltering summer when Todd and his family would join us and others under our carport and with true indigenous style spit sunflower seeds, burn our stump in the backyard, and play a good game of boules.

I have a specially ordered gift (take a few weeks) coming his way in commemoration of these fine events.

    Cheers!

  7. There are a lot of great memories lol. Most of them are of Todd teaching. I believe that these both happened on the same day. He started the lesson with something to the effect “You know if any time during this lesson, anyone has any urge to speak or feels like they have something to add to the lesson, you should just … suppress that urge. 🙂 there was a lot to cover or something – but it was funny to me – I always looked forward to his lessons.
A bit later he talked about what he and his friends would do when they were in sacrament meeting when they would get board. He said that they would take the hymn books and read the titles of the hymns but ad a phrase to it. If i remember right he said that the phrase would change but the most famous one was “in the bathroom.” so you would then get things like, -As I have loved you, in the bathroom – or All Creatures of Our God and King in the bathroom – you could see it was pretty funny. There was one that beat all the rest – I’ll leave that up to you all to find lol. Thanks for all your great lessons Todd and being a great friend! Happy Birthday!
